Q and A
What did you want to be when you were younger?
Honestly, this sounds cliche but one of my mom's friend's daughter was a Cathay Pacific flight attendant. That's when I realized I really wanted to be a flight attendant. My mom's dream was for me to become a lawyer. I guess I didn't mind it at that time. I'm just happy and blessed I fulfilled my flight attendant dream.
Who is your Role Model?
My mother is my role model. She taught me growing up that a woman can have a family and have a job at the same time. She also taught me the value of hard work and diligence. Nothing was handed to me on a silver platter. I learned the value of both when I was growing up dong household chores and taking care of my siblings.
What is your passion(s)?
My passions are make up and fashion. Honestly, it is demeaning when people think wearing make up is to gain attention and validation. I see make up as a way to make yourself feel good. It is all about your feelings and what makes you feel comfortable at the end of the day. It's not about what other people expect from you. Wearing make-up at work makes me feel energized, ready to conquer the challenges, it makes me feel more snappy and inspired. It should be that way for everyone.
What is a typical day off like in the life of Ria?
My typical day would be starting my day with yoga in the mornings, catching up with my yoga friends after with coffee. Then I'm free the rest of the day. Either I spend it working on upcoming projects or just watching Netflix, the key is to be contented and to be excited about the little things in life.
What is your favourite thing about what you do?
My favorite thing about what I do is that I get this unbelievable connection from people across the globe. I used to not have that many friends and I still do. I think that in life, as you mature, you realised the friendships you keep are the ones that you know will value you for who you are with no judgements. Social media has made it easy for me to meet people and inspire them to be brazen and follow their dreams.
Have you had any obstacles that you have had to overcome to get where you are now?
I believe that perseverance and determination is the key to achieving your goals. Most people get discouraged at the first sign of a bump or challenge along the road. Other people get disheartened by failure. But what most people don't realise is that success and achieving your goals doesn't happen overnight. Failure can only get to you if you let it.
When I first started my social media project, there was a lot of challenges for me. Mostly, I was limiting myself. There were a lot of I cant’s or a lot of negative things I unconsciously told myself. What I have learned is that I realised people appreciate you going for your passion, for your honesty, no pretence. People love and appreciate you when you are just being yourself. So I went ahead with posting just about everything about make up and about fashion and then I started engaging with my followers. Then I just watched everything grow. It is a slow and deliberate process. That's what I always think about achievements.
Do you have any goals?
My goal is to continue to build my own brand. I am still unsure if it's something to do with make up, fashion or skin care. We'll see!
